Cultural Heritage: Besides having several buildings which are testimony to the intense artistic and craft activity of the more recent history – the Est\u00eav\u00e3o Martins da Rocha Varas Mill Museum, the Forge and the Community Oven – Famalic\u00e3o is proud of its strong cultural and community activity:In the area of social services, there are two institutions – Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Cultural e Social de Famalic\u00e3o and Centro Social Paroquial de Famalic\u00e3o – as well as the Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Humanit\u00e1ria de Bombeiros Volunt\u00e1rios de Famalic\u00e3o da Serra (Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Famalic\u00e3o da Serra);Two more recreational organisations – Motoclube Mato Grosso (Mato Grosso Motorcycle Club) and Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Ca\u00e7a e Pesca (Hunting and Fishing Association);In terms of culture, the Banda Filarm\u00f3nica de Famalic\u00e3o (Famalic\u00e3o Philharmonic Band) – the only one in the municipality – and the Centro Cultural e Famalic\u00e3o (Famalic\u00e3o Cultural Centre) stand out, maintaining three active projects: Fanfarra NemF\u00e1NemFum and Grupo de Concertinas \u2018Foligaitos\u2019 (street entertainment) and Grupo de Cantares \u2018Cantarinhas de Famalic\u00e3o\u2019 (Famalic\u00e3o Singing Group) which collects and recovers local songs and traditions.Some of the parish’s cultural events reflect the work carried out by the organisation over the last 35 years: the \u2018Enterro do Entrudo\u2019 (Shrovetide Burial) and the \u2018Festa da Castanha e da Jeropiga\u2019 (Chestnut and Jeropiga \u2013 a traditional liqueur- Festivities).In the field of traditional crafts, there are still a basket maker, a tailor and occasional bottle wrappers ( using a wicker lintel).Barrelas Legend: \u2018\u2019Back in ancient times, Famalic\u00e3o was located at the top of the mountain, in Barrelas. At a certain period, there was a plague of ants which destroyed crops, killed animals and even children. As a result, the inhabitants abandoned Barrelas and moved to the valley, where they founded Famalic\u00e3o.\u2019Legend of Senhor Bom Jesus: \u2018A young shepherdess from Valhelhas was herding her flock by the river, about a kilometre from Famalic\u00e3o, when she found a small figure of the Crucified Christ, which she carried home. The next day, while passing by the same location, he found the small piece again, by the edge of the water. She returned home and locked the relic in a chest, but the sacred figure disappeared – and reappeared again and again at the same place, close to the stream of Famalic\u00e3o. For this reason, the lords of Valhelhas ordered the construction of the monastery of Senhor Bom Jesus, which is still standing and hosts the most important pilgrimage in Famalic\u00e3o, in honour and praise of Senhor Bom Jesus, during the last weekend of September.\u2019Religious patrimony: In addition to the main church (formerly the private chapel of the Counts of Castelo-Melhor), Famalic\u00e3o also has the chapel of the monastery of Bom Jesus de Famalic\u00e3o and four other small chapels dedicated to other saints, forming a cross with the main church at the very centre:\u2018 Village of Famalic\u00e3o, Four crossed chapels: Santo Ant\u00e3o and Santo Ant\u00f3nio, S. Marcos and Bom Jesus.\u2019 (Andr\u00e9 Carvalho)Natural Heritage: At Ribeira de Qu\u00eacere (a stream which flows into the Mondego River) the \u2018Po\u00e7o das Pias\u2019 is a testimony to the strength of the water, which has carved out two deep sinkholes into the granite bedrock. \u2018Pedra da Anvil\u2019 is a landmark on the western hillside. The chestnut and oak woods on the eastern hillside display their majestic splendour, turning red and yellow in autumn. High above, the imposing \u2018Penedo agudo\u2019 stands out.
