It was the intention of a group of citizens to erect a monument in honour of Augusto Gil before the poet died in 1929. However, it wasn't until 1937 that the city council went ahead with its construction in Praça Luís de Camões.

The location caused controversy and the monument was dismantled and moved to Largo de S. João. It was completed in 1940, but never inaugurated. At the time, it was the most beautiful piece of public art in the city, with the particularity of not honouring a figure from the world of medicine. The monument erected was designed by João da Silva (1880-1960), a friend of the poet and his family, an exponent of symbolist sculpture and the great innovator of the minted medal in Portugal. On top of the pedestal stands a bronze sculpture depicting the Muse Polymnia; her left hand is raised, holding flowers as if she were throwing them, and her right hand is holding a zither. On the front is a bronze medallion in medium relief depicting the bust of Augusto Gil.
